FUTURE OF THE KONO DISTRICT

A Vision for 70 acres

Because of The Finaza Foundation’s positive impact on the Bongema Villagers in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, the Chiefs and overseers graciously bequeathed 70 acres of land to the Finaza Foundation for increased development.  Below please read the outlines for our plans to use this land wisely.

Primary School & Secondary School/Adult Reading & Comprehension Classes

Within the 70 acres of land a school will be built with very focused and specific goals and a rigorous curriculum to support these goals.  We want to create an environment and awareness that education is the direct link to a better life.

The goal is to educate a community who will then be capable of rebuilding their own community to be a well-informed, progressive and comprehensive thriving populace. The curriculum will be focused on teaching the general core subjects of math, science, and reading/writing but correlating them to work and trade opportunities.  Classroom instruction will make up a large portion of the day along with the opportunity to apply the concepts and methods taught in the classroom out in the world.  These opportunities will be a mixture of hands-on applications, project-based activities, small group exercises, observations, and other creative yet informative inside/outside classroom opportunities.

Our focus is to take the actual small and large challenges of the community and teach towards finding their solutions.  So that youth are learning the basics of education and simultaneously applying these tools to improve their lives and the community.   For example, students will have an opportunity to learn about math through small engineering projects, science with farming initiatives, health and nutrition with observations and internships in the Wellness Center.  Students will also learn how to apply math, science and history to the Arts and Dance courses.  Every academic course will include an out of the classroom experience.

Wellness Center will serve the community in a number of ways.

•Treating local diseases and providing immediate attention to medical needs.

•Providing the community at large with guidance and preventive measures for the common medical threats, such as malaria, typhoid fever, dysentery, HIV/AIDS, dental hygiene, malnourishment, stress, and anxiety. Classes and open forums will be held on how to properly protect against these aliments.

•Free vaccines and inoculations will also be available.

•A formalized yoga series will be available as an additional and alternative form of healing for the community.

•Students from our school will have an opportunity to attain internships at the Wellness Center to gain a deeper understanding of the field of medicine.
